Bay Laurel's aromatic glossy dark green leaves make it a beautiful plant for hedging, topiary or as a specimen. Its one of the oldest shrubs in cultivation, comes from the Mediterranean, also known as Sweet Bay and of course it is the source of the bay leaves used fresh or dried in cooking. Its slow growing and only needs a light trim in summer to keep it in shape. It is fully evergreen, likes a fertile, moist well drained soil and sun or partial shade. It is quite tender and needs to be positioned in a sheltered spot and given some stem protection in cold weather.
