Field Maple is a fast growing (30/60cm pa), native, deciduous hedging plant, which is used both in a mixed hedge (though it is often faster growing than other species in a mixed hedge so can make it look slightly untidy) or as a single species hedge. Field Maple has 5 lobed leaves which are green/red in spring and summer and then in autumn turn a lovely buttery yellow colour. It has small yellow/green flowers in spring and winged seeds (like helicopters) in autumn. It likes most soils and positions, including coastal, chalky and exposed sites but is not suited to full shade. Field Maple should be trimmed to shape at the beginning of winter.r.
